10 top tips for safe and successful dating

Dating can be a minefield, so for those of you who are thinking of finding that special someone, here are some tips about how to have a  safe and successful first date.

1. Meet in a busy public place.

Arrange to meet in a bar or restaurant, where there are lots of people and a good buzz.

2. Tell someone you are going on a date

Tell a friend or a family member that you are meeting someone for a first date. Let them know who you are meeting, where you are meeting and at what time.

3. Arrange to text a friend during the date

An hour or so into your first date, text your friend or family member, to let them know how it is going.

4. Trust your instincts

Is something feels “off”, then make a polite but quick get away. Don’t feel you have to stay out of politeness – if you are not comfortable, then leave.

5. Dress appropriately

Wear something comfortable that you feel happy in. Don’t be tempted to wear something that you don’t feel comfortable in,  in an attempt to impress.

6. Don’t change your personality

Just be yourself. Relax and enjoy the date, but don’t try to be someone you are not.

7. Go Slowly

Don’t rush a new relationship. If you feel a good connection, arrange another date but don’t keep texting or messaging in between times. A follow up text is fine, but don’t make it a habit. And stalking on Facebook is a No-No!

8. Avoid difficult conversation topics

Keep conversation simple and find topics that you both enjoy. Politics and religion are best avoided, as well as talking about previous relationships.

9. Plan the second date together

If you do want to see each other again, plan your 2nd date together Find something that you both enjoy.

10. Be selective

Don’t feel you have to have a 2nd date. You can afford to be selective, and if this date doesn’t work out, keep positive and try again!
