Within our year-long Love without Limits Campaign, we want to highlight the challenges that people with a learning disability experience in regard to relationships and dating.
Some of the barrier’s and challenges stem from:
- Negative attitudes and discrimination in society
- Overprotection of people with a learning disability by their family members and support staff, often caused by a worry about the potential risks.
- Lack of appropriate and accessible resources
- And limited social opportunities to meet people
Many people, including some professionals who work in health and social care, still do not view relationships and sex education as an important topic to explore with people with a learning disability.
We want to highlight and change this.
In the short video clip below, some of our Dates-n-Mates Stirling and Clackmannanshire members and colleagues with lived experience share a snapshot of their thoughts on this topic.
